Greetings

I have a WH1081 which I have just started to experiment with. So far so good, though I m not impressed with
the EasyWeather software  it came with. My ambition is to eventually use my weather station to fill a gap in
SWN's coverage of the southern part of the country.

I have tried Cumulus but don't really want to keep my notebook on all the time to support online access.

Looking around I have seen people recommending the Meteohub system. I would be interested to know if anyone
here has experience with the Meteohub/Sheevaplug combination offered by either Ambient Weather or NewIT?

Hi Chris and welcome to the forum.

There are plenty of people using the likes of Cumulus & Weather Display software who don't keep the PC running 24/7 and both software types will download the missing data when the program is restarted.

Metrohub is used by David from Elgol on Skye and I'm sure he'll be along to tell you about it.
I have a dedicated desktop that runs everything for my weather website, but I need that as I have a lightning detector that's a PCi card. Though if I could find something like a mini-PC that takes the full size PCi card then I would look at that for the future.

It would be handy to have another station in the southern part of the country so your contributions would be most welcomed if/when you do get your data online.  Grin

I've been using Meteohub since March 2008. I run Meteohub on ALIX-1D hardware (consumes around 7W IIRC).

I've no experience of pre-packaged variants, but presume they essentially just do the software install for you, and pre-buy the Meteohub licence?

One way of trialing Meteoplug without buying special hardware is to use the VMWare version (you just need the free VMware player, with that you can run a virtual Linux box on your windows PC).

You might also like to consider Meteoplug. Meteoplug is an even less resource hungry system. It achieves this by using very a low power[1]  computer to do the collecting from the weather station, pushing that data up to a server at regular intervals.

N.B. Meteohub is a one-off purchase. Meteoplug is an annual subscription. If you arrange your own hardware then the software is available for free evaluation in both cases.

Oh, and a Meteohub can (optionally) feed the Meteoplug server too. I do that for several reasons:
a) It's effectively an off site backup.
b) The Meteoplug charting facilities are so good.

[1] e.g. a Bifferboard only consumes ~2W. As I happen to have a Fritz!Box 7270/7240 router I could even run it on that!

Thanks for the helpful suggestions, which I will consider carefully as I progress.

PS.
I should have added that Meteohub can feed data for an entry on the SCWN map (provided you have a website to upload to), but Meteoplug can't[1].

[1] Though if you have a web account that includes a crontab facility I think it might be possible (i.e. by pulling suitable data, at regular intervals, from the Meteoplug server using the Meteoplug 'template' facilities)?
